The Importance of References

The Importance of ReferencesThe Importance of ReferencesWhen it comes to searching for a job, there are two things you already know Have your resume ready and brush up on your interview skills. But what most job seekers overlook is the importance of references. A good reference could be the deciding factor when an employer narrows down the field to a few potential candidates. Here are a few tips for putting together your reference listMake wise choicesYou should pick people who know and can discuss intelligently your abilities that might relate to a particular position youre applying for.Foresee trouble spotsMaybe your past manager and you never really saw things eye to eye so choose a coworker at the same level or within the same department you were in to give you a reference. As long as you worked with them, its okay to use them on your reference list.Get permissionDont blindside someone by not checking with them first before you put their name down on your reference list. Theres no thing worse than being put on the spot by a call from a hiring manager asking questions about your work ethic and style.Inform your referencesYou should always give your references a description of the position youre applying for and what the hiring employer is looking for. If they have nothing to go on, its hard to address a particular companys needs and wants.Keep them in the loopIf youre getting closer to the time when your references will actually be contacted, give them a heads up about a call that might be coming their way. You could also share the actual job posting with them so they can speak about your qualifying skills.Use your LinkedIn profileLinkedIn is a very powerful tool when it comes to references. If you already have them set up, it makes it easier to share them with potential employers without having to bother anyone. You can ask for permanent references on your LinkedIn profile for opportunities in general even those you didnt know existed

A third of tech workers have a coworker who makes them want to quitA third of tech workers have a coworker who makes them want to quitWith looming deadlines, extra projects, and demanding bosses, life at the office can sometimes be a lot to manage. Add unstable work relationships between coworkers into the mix, and it can sometimes be too much.A recent study by Comparably, a company that provides data on compensation and workplace culture, delved into the nature of coworkers connections with each other. The study, which surveyed more than 36,000 people working at tech companies of different sizes, found that one in three respondents reported working with someone who makes them want to leave their job.Of all the findings in the study, here are some that stand out.An annoying coworker can make you want to quitJust fewer than half of women surveyed (43%) said they wanted to jump ship because of a coworker, compared to 32% of men surveyed.People in business development and design position swere more likely than those in other departments to want to quit their job because of a coworker, 46% and 45% respectively.Conversely, only 14% of those in communications positions said they work with someone who makes them want to quit.Where experience was concerned, those more than 10 years of work showed the highest rates of wanting to leave because of a coworker, 37%, compared to 28% percent of those with one to three years of work experience. The benefits of work friendshipsNot all the findings were negative. Some people, such aswork spouses, actually enjoy each others company in the office,More than half of men (51%) and women (55%) surveyed reported having a close friend at work. According to the study, this is an important figure, as studies show that people who cultivate friendships at the office are happier and more productive at work.Experience-wise, 55% of people with one to six years of work experience said they had a close friend at the office, compared to 48% in entry -level positions and 50% of those with more than 10 years of experience. The office dating sceneSome people arent afraid to be more than friends while employed at the same workplace - the survey found 26% of men and 28% of women have dated a coworker. This was true for 33% of people working in Operations, 28% working in Marketing and IT, and 23% working in Engineering. How people feel about sharing their salaryIt doesnt seem like everyones jumping at the chance to divulge how much they make to those they work with.Among all age categories surveyed, 31% said they were not likely to reveal what they take home to coworkers, 25% said it depends, 21% would never do it, 13% were somewhat likely, and just 9% were very likely.Within the 18-30 bracket, more than 30% reported being somewhat or very likely to share their salary. In the 31-35 bracket, 29% said it depends on the circumstances, which the report says is the most in any age group. The 41-45 bracket was the least in favor of telling c oworkers, with 28% saying they would never do so.How people feel about their bossesThe study also explored the loyalty people have to those they work with, proving that people tend to favor their coworkers over their supervisors.A plurality (36%)reported that they have the most allegiance to their coworkers. Next up in terms of popularity was Boss or Manager at 30%, then No One at 13% and Company Mission/geistesbild at 11%.The section that bottomed out on theother extreme was Direct Reports at a slim 10%.Its clear that people have strong opinions about who they work with and what they choose to share.

Millennials shouldnt only be saving for retirement

Millennials shouldnt only be saving for retirementMillennials shouldnt only be saving for retirementOk, Millennials. Listen up.Heres what nobody teaches you inschool.Sure, we memorized the capitals of all 50 states. We learned how to find the hypotenuse. We learned how to say, I would like a cheeseburger, please, in French. But nobody told us how to manage our money effectively. Nobody explained what a Roth IRA is. But most importantly, nobody taught us this vitally important lesson about moneyFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWithout a cushion, you will never (or very, very rarely) feel confident enough to take the leap and do whatever it is you really want todo.Sure, were encouraged to save?- ?but save for what? For retirement? Its hard enough as a 20-something figuring out where you want to be a year from now, let alone being able to warrant putting money away now for when youre 65 +.As soon as I graduated college, the first thing I did welches reach out to people who had successfully navigated the finance world and asked them what I should do.I didnt know the answer, but I knew what I didnt know?- ?and I didnt know anything about managing money. The overwhelming response was that I should immediately start saving for retirement, even if it was only a small percentage of each paycheck. So thats what I did.I opened a Roth IRA and started putting away 510% of every paycheck. But then I started to question where my active savings would be.What about the things I couldnt buy now, but wanted to buy later? How do I become my own babo? How do I take the leap into the unknown? The answer is, yes, you need to have a sense of what it is you actually want to do (and how youre going to do it), but you also need runway. You need to save money so that when you do take the leap, you have a little something to stand on while you find your way.As a young person, this is the ultimate test of patience. It is far easier to spend money as soon as you have it?- ?and on completely worthless things, no less. The bar is not a great investment. I was on a British vessel flagged for truce by President Jackson, on my way to pick up a captured friend in Marlborough. We got as far as the mouth of the Patuxent and then we were bedrngnis permitted to return lest an intended attack on Baltimore by the British should be disclosed. We were brought up the Bay just across from Fort McHenry and there we were compelled to witness the bombardment of Fort McHenry, which the Admiral had boasted that he would carry in a few hours, and that the city must fall.Challenge We watched the flag at the Fort through the whole day with more than 500 bombs from British ships to Ft. McHenry. In the night the smaller weather flag was flying while we watched the Bomb shells in darkness not knowing that the American Military had secretly planned 4 barges, which the British did not detect. These barges attached the British militia and sent them running, some with tugs assisting. At the early dawn our eyes were surprising greeted by the proudly the 15-star flag of our country (late to be known as the Star Spang led Banner).Actions By morning, I was compelled to pen a poem that reflected my thoughts of the war and particularly of the flag, Oh say can you see by the dawns early light? was my first thought.I wrote four verses that reflected topics about the day before and my vision of the flag in the morning. The first verse reviews the dawns light and the flag with broad stripes and bright stars that was still flying in the morning the second verse reviews the dread silence and how the flag was fitfully blowing the third verse reviews the havoc of war and the battles confusion and the final and fourth verse celebrates the victory and peace that preserved our nation. Results I witnessed the last enemy fire to fall on Fort McHenry and in this memory, I wrote the poem Defence of Fort McHenry, which has been renamed to The Star-Spangled Banner and has become a well-known American patriotic song. The poem and song were recognized for official Navy use in 1931 and became the national them by a cong ressional resolution on March 3, 1931 and signed by President Herbert Hoover.+++++++++Defence of our Nation, Patrick Henry
